LECTURE WITH SCREENING / ZLÍN AND METROPOLIS / MARTIN JIROUŠEK

On Wednesday, 3 June 2026 at 6:00 PM, we invite you to Galerie Kabinet T in Building 12 of the former Bata factory complex in Zlín for the lecture and screening ZLÍN AND METROPOLIS.

Martin Jiroušek’s lecture explores surprising connections between the functionalist architecture of Zlín, the modernist utopias of the twentieth century, and the legendary film Metropolis. Through film excerpts, archival materials, and expert commentary, we will examine the image of the city as a machine, the fascination with technology, and the social divisions that shaped visions of the future. The lecture will also focus on why Zlín still resembles the setting of a futuristic film and how Bata’s vision of the city became one of the most distinctive symbols of modernity in Central Europe.

The lecture will be presented by Martin Jiroušek, an expert on the poetics of horror in art.
